Hockeytown is home to the Stanley Cup—again.
Using a little Motown magic on the road, the Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup for the fourth time in 11 seasons Wednesday night with a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6 of the finals.
The celebration came two nights later than expected. The Penguins forced the series back to Pennsylvania by tying Game 5 with 34.3 seconds left in regulation and winning it shortly before 1 a.m. in Detroit on Petr Sykora’s power-play goal in triple overtime.
Undeterred, the Red Wings hit the road and wrapped up their fourth straight series on the road in these playoffs. Detroit is third in NHL history with 11 Stanley Cup titles, trailing fellow Original Six clubs Montreal and Toronto.
Just like in Game 5, things got a little dicey for the Red Wings, who allowed Marian Hossa’s power-play goal with 1:27 remaining that got the Penguins to 3-2. Pittsburgh had already pulled Game 5 hero Marc-Andre Fleury to create a 6-on-4 skating edge.
With the final seconds ticking down, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby put a backhander on goal that Hossa just missed with a tip at the right post.

Terrell Owens Gets His Signing Bonus In Delicious Popcorn
At yesterday's press conference to announce his big new contract, Jerry Jones presented Terrell Owens with a giant tub of popcorn (so big that it required two people to carry it) and told him that the popcorn was his signing bonus. I think he was kidding, and Owens seemed amused by it. News reports indicate that Owens's actual signing bonus will be $12.9 million.
I think the two sides should come to a compromise and award Terrell Owens $12.9 million worth of popcorn.
Obviously, they'd want to give Owens the good stuff, and when I think of high-quality popcorn, I think of one man and one man only: Isiah Thomas. The value-priced 3½ gallon gift tin of Dale and Thomas popcorn is $45. For $12.9 million, Jerry Jones can get 286,666 of those. That would give Terrell 1,003,331 million gallons of popcorn, available in his favorite delicious Isiah Thomas-approved flavors. Who could say no to that?
I think it could become the newest trend in the NFL. If you pay a guy in popcorn, does it count against your salary cap? Is there a separate popcorn cap? I don't think that's addressed in the current collective bargaining agreement.
It's just something to keep in mind, NFL general managers, the next time you enter into contract negotiations with a guy. Here are some recommendations for a few players.
Travis Henry: His next contract (if he ever gets one) probably won't be worth a lot, so I think the signing bonus could be taken care of with a gift certificate for a vasectomy. This is the very definition of cost-effectiveness. Think of the future savings.
Tony Romo: Multiple copies of this book, Toxic In-Laws: Loving Strategies for Protecting Your Marriage. If his relationship continues down its current path, he might need it.
Troy Polamalu: 500,000 cases of Mane 'n Tail shampoo. Yeah, it's horse shampoo, but Chazz Michael Michaels swears by it. Polamalu's going to have to make a few more Pro Bowls before he gets the Verticoli brush, though, as it's carved out of illegal whale blone.
Shawne Merriman: A lifetime supply of Hulk Hogan vitamins. He's shown flashes of brilliance in his foray into professional wrestling, and I think if he takes these vitamins (which may or may not be healthier and more legal than any vitamins he's currently using) and says his prayers, Merriman-mania could be running wild over all of us.

2016 Summer Olympics Host Down To Final Four
ATHENS, Greece (AP)—Getting to the final phase was one thing. Now, Chicago has some hard work ahead to overcome weaknesses in its bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Chicago was one of four cities selected as bid finalists Thursday, along with Tokyo; Madrid, Spain, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The lineup sets up a high-profile contest featuring major cities from the Americas, Europe and Asia.
Failing to make the International Olympic Committee shortlist were three cities—Doha, Qatar; Prague, Czech Republic, and Baku, Azerbaijan.
The IOC said Doha had the potential to host the Olympics and even rated the Qatari capital tied for third with Chicago in its technical assessment. But the IOC said it turned back Doha because it proposed holding the games in October.
The finalists now advance to a 16-month race that will culminate on Oct. 2, 2009, with a secret ballot by the full IOC at its session in Copenhagen, Denmark.
“It’s a very competitive field,” said Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, who is trying to take the Summer Olympics back to the United States for the first time since the 1996 Atlanta Games. “The competition begins now.”
Chicago got a strong dose of reality in the IOC’s report assessing the technical bids, which cited problems with finances and transportation, among other things.
“We really respect the experts who have done the evaluation,” said Chicago bid leader Patrick Ryan, who had not yet read the report. “We’re going to learn from that. We’re going to respect it and we’re not going to alibi to ourselves about it. We’re going to do everything we can to correct all the deficiencies.”
Tokyo scored highest in the technical evaluation, which rated cities in 11 categories—including infrastructure, venues, transportation, security and finances—on a scale of 1 to 10.
The Japanese capital scored an overall average of 8.4, followed by Madrid with 8.2. Chicago was back at 7.0 with Doha, with Rio at 6.5. Chicago didn’t rank first in any of the categories, and lagged in fifth in three.
The early ranking is not crucial, however. When the IOC picked the finalists for the 2012 Olympics in 2004, London was ranked third behind first-place Paris and Madrid in the technical report. London went on to win the games in 2005.
“We’ll evaluate the report, look at the strong points and any weaknesses,” Daley said. “There’s always a wakeup call for everything. If there is any negative, you take it and try to be able to correct it, simple as that.”
The IOC report said Chicago’s wording on government guarantees “does not fully confirm” with requirements; questioned the $27 billion figure listed for highway and transit projects; said sports venue construction budgets “appear low and may warrant review,” and cited a “lack of detail” in plans for transportation between venue clusters.
“We’re very pleased, but at the same time sober knowing we have to improve and have a tremendous amount of work ahead,” U.S. IOC member Bob Ctvrtlik said. “This is the first hurdle. … We’ll keep improving until we submit our bid book.”
Cities must submit their detailed bid files to the IOC by Feb. 12, 2009. After that, a panel of IOC experts will visit each of the cities, tour the proposed sites and meet with bid and government leaders. The panel will release an evaluation report to the IOC members a month before the October 2009 vote.
Madrid is back again after a third-place finish in the vote for the 2012 Olympics.
“I think there are about 40 million Spaniards that want us to bring the games home,” bid leader Mercedes Coghen said.
Tokyo, which held the Summer Games in 1964, hopes to bring the Olympics to Asia eight years after Beijing.
“Now it’s full steam ahead for my team and the Japanese people,” Tokyo bid chief Ichiro Kono said. “We have no time to lose in preparing the best possible candidature file for the IOC.”
Rio would become the first South American city to host the Olympics.
“We’re very happy—the emotion to have a city of a country that never organized the Olympic Games among the others that have already organized. It’s a great challenge but I think we are ready,” Rio bid president Carlos Arthur Nuzman said.
Whether to include Doha in the final mix shaped up as the main issue for the IOC executive board. In the end, the IOC said it couldn’t accept Doha’s proposal to hold the games from Oct. 14-30 to avoid the searing summer heat. The IOC prefers the July-August time slot.
The board “unanimously decided not to grant this exception as it conflicts with the international sporting calendar and would therefore be bad for the athletes and for sports fans,” IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies said. “It would disrupt athletes’ training programs and overload the sports schedule at an already busy time of the year.”
Doha, capital of a tiny but wealthy Arab Gulf country of about 1 million people, had loomed as the wild card as it sought to bring the games to the Middle East for the first time.
“While we are of course disappointed, we remain extremely proud to have been given the opportunity over the past 12 months to demonstrate that Doha is a truly modern and developing city, able to compete with some of the world’s largest capitals and able to host international sporting events of the highest standard,” Doha bid chairman Hassan Ali Bin Ali said.

How does Tiger choose to repay that respect, during the NHL's moment in the spotlight?

"I don't really care," he said with an impish smile. "It's all about the Dodgers. I don't think anyone really watches hockey anymore."
What's rather amusing is that this wasn't a hard-hitting question from a Detroit sports reporter; it was a softball lobbed by Julius Mason, the PGA of America's senior director of communications. When it appeared Tiger would be less than gracious to the sport currently capturing the imagination of a place called Hockeytown, Mason tried to end the answer by saying Woods was "politically correct as always and that's what we ..." before Tiger added his candid assessment of hockey's popularity.
Not even PR flackery could curb Tiger's hunger to diss the game.
The NHL addressed his comments in a general way. Our first inclination was to label this as some clever NIKE brainwashing: Convincing one of its biggest brand names to ignore how awesome hockey really is in order to go after the NHL and Reebok. But wouldn't the EA Sports brainwashing counteract that?
Perhaps Tiger is still bitter about the demise of the All-Star Café with Gretzky.
The bottom line is that Tiger Woods downgraded a sport that's been good to him, from charity appearances at golf tournaments to fans asking about when "hockey's Tiger Woods" will arrive. As they say among champions: Act like you've been there, Tiger. You're already the guy who gets bigger headlines for not playing in a tournament than the NHL gets for playing an all-star game. No need to rub it in.
As for you, Gretzky: Time to get Tiger in the arena for a playoff game, so the puckhead conversion can begin and we can put this all behind us.
